2023

Words and phrases orbit the figures in bold typographic compositions, visualising themes of memory, identity, and generational legacy while drawing attention to the artwork.

A Transport for London advertising campaign brought Stacey Gillian Abe’s solo exhibition Shrub-let of Old Ayivu into public spaces across London.

The exhibition catalogue translates the campaign’s visual language into a printed record of the show.

Window vinyls extend the exhibition into the public realm, creating a visual dialogue between the gallery and the street.

About the project

Stacey Gillian Abe’s Shrub-let of Old Ayivu explored themes of memory, identity, and generational legacy through a series of intimate portraits and figurative works. The project involved creating a visual campaign for the exhibition at Unit London, spanning Transport for London advertising, gallery window vinyls, and the exhibition catalogue.

The challenge was to develop a visual language capable of capturing attention across public and gallery spaces while remaining sensitive to the emotional depth of the work.

The campaign was built around the idea of shared memory. Evocative words and phrases orbit the central figures, creating graphic compositions that reinforce the exhibition’s themes while drawing viewers into the narrative. Bold typography and carefully considered layouts balance visibility and impact with space for the artwork to remain the primary focus.

The identity extended across large-scale outdoor advertising positioned along key London bus routes, transforming the exhibition into a visible presence throughout the city. Window vinyls translated the campaign into the physical gallery environment, creating a visual threshold between the street and the exhibition beyond.

The accompanying catalogue brought together the visual language of the campaign with the exhibited works, creating a publication that documented the exhibition while extending its narrative.

Together, these elements formed a cohesive exhibition identity designed to connect audiences with Stacey Gillian Abe’s exploration of memory, heritage, and belonging.
